The Virtue of Remaining on the Prayer Mat After Fajr Until Ishraq

Islam encourages believers to dedicate their time to acts of worship that bring them closer to Allah. Among the most rewarding yet often neglected acts of worship are remaining seated in the place of prayer after Fajr, engaging in dhikr (remembrance of Allah), recitation of the Qur’an, and du‘a until the sun rises, then performing the two rak‘ahs of Ishraq. This practice carries immense rewards, as evidenced by numerous authentic hadiths and the practices of the righteous predecessors. However, many people overlook this act due to modern distractions, busy lifestyles, and a lack of awareness about its immense virtues.

The Virtue of Remaining in Worship After Fajr

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) emphasized the importance of remaining in remembrance of Allah after Fajr. He said:

“Whoever prays Fajr in congregation and then sits remembering Allah until the sun rises, then prays two rak‘ahs, will have a reward like that of Hajj and Umrah – complete, complete, complete.” (Tirmidhi 586, authenticated by Al-Albani)

This hadith highlights the immense reward of this act. While performing Hajj and Umrah requires great effort and financial resources, a person can attain a similar reward simply by remaining engaged in worship after Fajr and praying the Ishraq prayer.

Why This Practice Is Often Neglected

Despite its immense rewards, many Muslims find it difficult to implement this habit in their daily lives. Several factors contribute to this neglect:

  1. Modern Lifestyles and Work Commitments: Many people have early morning responsibilities such as work, school, or household duties, making it difficult to dedicate extra time after Fajr.

  2. Lack of Awareness: Some Muslims are unaware of the great virtues associated with staying in worship until Ishraq, as this practice is not commonly emphasized in many communities.

  3. Technology and Distractions: The widespread use of smartphones and social media often leads to people checking messages or engaging in other activities immediately after Fajr instead of focusing on worship.

  4. Physical Fatigue: Some struggle with staying awake after Fajr, especially if they have not had enough rest at night.

  5. Inconsistent Routine: Many who attempt to develop this habit find it difficult to remain consistent due to irregular sleep patterns or lack of self-discipline.

Understanding these challenges can help believers find ways to overcome them and incorporate this blessed practice into their daily routine.

The Significance of This Act in Light of the Qur’an

The Qur’an praises those who remain engaged in the remembrance of Allah during the early morning:

“And glorify the praises of your Lord before sunrise and before sunset.” (Qur’an 50:39)

Remaining in a state of worship after Fajr aligns with this command, as it is a time when the angels witness the devotion of the believers. Furthermore, Allah says:

“Indeed, the prayer prevents immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater.” (Qur’an 29:45)

By engaging in Qur’an recitation, dhikr, and supplication during this blessed time, one strengthens their connection with Allah and safeguards themselves from spiritual heedlessness.

The Special Blessings of the Fajr Time

Fajr time is blessed, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made a special supplication for it:

“O Allah, bless my Ummah in the early morning.” (Abu Dawood 2606)

The morning is a time of peace and tranquility when the heart is most receptive to spiritual nourishment. By spending this time in worship, a believer starts their day with barakah (blessing) and strengthens their faith.

The Ishraq Prayer: A Gateway to Endless Rewards

After waiting until the sun rises approximately 15-20 minutes after Fajr, a person performs two rak‘ahs known as Salat al-Ishraq. This prayer holds great merit. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“In the morning, charity is due on every joint of a person. Each tasbeeh (saying ‘SubhanAllah’) is charity, each tahmeed (saying ‘Alhamdulillah’) is charity, each tahleel (saying ‘La ilaha illallah’) is charity, each takbeer (saying ‘Allahu Akbar’) is charity, and enjoining good is charity, and forbidding evil is charity. And what suffices for all of that is two rak‘ahs that one prays in the forenoon.” (Muslim 720)

The Ishraq prayer not only brings immense rewards but also serves as a source of physical and spiritual rejuvenation.

The Example of the Pious Predecessors

The righteous predecessors and scholars recognized the immense benefit of remaining in worship after Fajr. Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would sit in his prayer place after Fajr, engaging in the remembrance of Allah until sunrise. This practice was also followed by the Sahabah (companions) and early scholars, demonstrating its significance.

 Steps to Implement This Habit

  1. Pray Fajr in Congregation: One should strive to pray Fajr in the masjid, if possible, as it multiplies the reward.

  2. Avoid Distractions: Refrain from engaging in worldly matters immediately after Fajr.

  3. Engage in Dhikr and Qur’an Recitation: Recite the morning adhkar, read Qur’an, and make du‘a.

  4. Adjust Sleep Patterns: Sleeping early and maintaining a consistent schedule can help overcome fatigue.

  5. Be Consistent: Even if one starts with a few minutes daily, consistency will lead to lasting benefits.

  6. Pray Ishraq: After approximately 15-20 minutes, complete the worship by praying two rak‘ahs of Ishraq.

Lastly.

Remaining seated on the prayer mat after Fajr and engaging in acts of worship until the sun rises is a practice filled with blessings and immense rewards. It purifies the heart, strengthens faith, and grants one a reward equivalent to Hajj and Umrah. The Ishraq prayer further completes this beautiful act of devotion, bringing spiritual and worldly benefits. By recognizing the obstacles that often prevent people from practicing this habit and taking proactive steps to overcome them, more believers can incorporate this highly rewarding routine into their daily lives.

May Allah grant us the ability to make this a consistent part of our daily lives. Ameen.
