When You Feel Spiritually Low
A Gentle Advice for Tired Souls
“Indeed, the hearts become rusty just as iron does.”
— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (al-Muʿjam al-Awsat)
There are days when the heart feels heavy. Prayers feel dry. The Qur’an—once a source of sweetness—feels distant. You wake up burdened, your soul aching to connect with Allah, yet struggling to do so. If this is you, know that you are not alone—and more importantly, that you are not lost.
Even the most righteous of believers have experienced spiritual lows. What matters is not that you fell, but that you keep walking back to the door of the Most Merciful.
Spiritual Lows Are Natural — Even for the Righteous
Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله wrote:
“The heart is like a bird: love is its head, and fear and hope are its two wings.”
(Madarij al-Salikin)
Faith fluctuates. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Indeed, faith wears out in the heart of one of you just as clothes wear out. So ask Allah to renew faith in your hearts.”
(al-Mustadrak, Hasan)
This hadith normalizes the experience of spiritual fatigue. Even the Sahabah would ask the Prophet ﷺ how to rejuvenate their iman. So if your soul feels tired, know that seeking renewal is the prophetic way.
What Causes Spiritual Lows?
1. Neglecting Daily Dhikr
Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said:
“Dhikr to the heart is like water to a fish. What happens to the fish when it is taken out of water?”
When we abandon our daily remembrance—morning/evening adhkar, istighfar, Qur'an—our spiritual heart begins to dry out.
2. Excessive Dunya & Distraction
Hearts are affected by what we constantly engage in. Social media, constant scrolling, arguments, mindless entertainment—all dim the heart’s ability to reflect.
3. Sin and Delayed Tawbah
Imam al-Shafiʿi once complained of his memory weakening. His teacher advised him to leave sin, for “knowledge is light, and the light of Allah is not given to a sinner.”
Gentle Advice to Reconnect with Allah
1. Return Without Guilt: Allah’s Door Is Always Open
Allah says:
“Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.’”
(Qur’an 39:53)
Guilt should lead to repentance, not despair. Shaitan whispers, “You’re a hypocrite. Why bother?” But Allah says: “Do not despair.”
Even if your salah has been mechanical, or your du‘a feels forced—still pray. Still raise your hands. Still come back. Allah loves those who return again and again.
2. Take One Step at a Time
Sometimes we expect instant spirituality—overnight highs. But faith is a slow burn. Don’t wait until you feel “ready.” Do what you can:
Begin your day with Surah Al-Fatiha, slowly.
Recite “Astaghfirullah” 100x daily, even while cooking or walking.
Pray two rakaʿat alone, softly, even if you cry from emptiness—not from joy.
Small, consistent acts revive the heart more than occasional bursts.
3. Read the Qur'an as a Personal Message
Ibn Mas‘ud رضي الله عنه said:
“When you hear Allah saying ‘O you who believe’, then pay attention—for either a command is coming, or a prohibition.”
Read
one ayah. Ask: “What
is Allah telling me today?”
Let
the Qur’an speak to you.
Keep a journal if it helps.
4. Keep Good Company & Avoid Isolation
Faith thrives in gatherings of light. Attend a weekly Islamic class, even online. Join a Qur’an circle. Speak to someone of ilm or sincerity. Avoid isolation—it’s Shaitan’s strongest trap.
When You Can’t Do Anything Else… Just Weep
Ibn al-Qayyim wrote:
“If your heart feels distant from Allah, ask yourself: Who moved—you or Him?”
You haven’t sinned too much to return. You haven’t failed too many times. He is still Al-Wadud (the Most Loving), Al-Ghafur (the Most Forgiving), Al-Latif (the Most Gentle).
Let your tears speak when words fail. Raise your hands and say, “Ya Allah, I miss You.” That’s enough.

A Reminder to the Tired Soul
Your worth is not measured by spiritual perfection—but by your return to the path. Keep walking, even if you’re crawling. Even if you’ve been away for months. You are still beloved to Allah, and His mercy is nearer than your jugular vein.
Let your low be your turning point. Let your fall be your sujud.
“And He found you lost and guided you.”
(Qur’an 93:7)
May Allah Heal Every Soul Reading This
I pray that this message finds the heart it was written for. May your tears be turned into light, your fatigue into closeness, and your struggle into elevation.
And remember: even when you feel nothing—Allah still sees everything.
وَهُوَ
مَعَكُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ
“He
is with you wherever you are.”
(Qur’an
57:4)
