The Consequences of Neglecting Divine Guidance: A Quranic Perspective on Spiritual Blindness

Surah Taha (20:125-127)

*"(125) He will say, 'My Lord, why have You raised me up blind while I used to see?' (126) [Allah] will say, 'Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them; and thus, will you this Day be forgotten.' (127) And thus, do We recompense he who transgressed and did not believe in the signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more enduring."*

These verses from *Surah Taha* describe a critical moment on the *Day of Judgment, where a person who rejected divine guidance in life is resurrected in a state of **blindness. In desperation, he questions **why he has been raised blind, despite having had physical sight in the world. Allah responds that this blindness is a **just consequence* of his past actions—he deliberately ignored divine guidance, so now he is forgotten and abandoned.

The following verse reinforces that this punishment is for those who *exceeded limits (أسرف)* and rejected faith, reminding us that the suffering of the Hereafter is far greater, and everlasting compared to the temporary trials of this world. Additionally, this warning applies to those who *abandon the Book of their Lord—those who neither **recite nor reflect upon it*. Neglecting the Quran leads to spiritual blindness, as its guidance is meant to illuminate the path to Allah. The scholars have emphasized that those who turn away from the Quran, neither reading nor acting upon it, risk falling into heedlessness and ultimately face a grievous reckoning.

*1. Linguistic Analysis*

- *حَشَرْتَنِي (You raised me up/gathered me) * → Comes from *حشر, meaning to **gather or assemble. This word is often used for resurrection, emphasizing that **all will be gathered before Allah*.

- *أَعْمَى (Blind)* → This is not just *physical blindness, but **spiritual blindness*—a lack of insight and refusal to see the truth.

- *نَسِيْتَهَا (You forgot them) * → The forgetting here is *deliberate neglect*, not accidental loss of memory.

- *تُنْسَى (You will be forgotten) * → The consequence is that just as this person *ignored Allah’s signs, he will now be **ignored and abandoned* on the Day of Judgment.

 *2. Cross-Referencing with Other Verses*

These themes appear throughout the Quran:

- *Surah Al-Isra (17:72): * "And whoever is blind in this world will be blind in the Hereafter, and more astray in way."

- *Surah Al-Hashr (59:19): * "And be not like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves."

- *Surah Al-Furqan (25:30): * "And the Messenger will say, 'O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Quran as [something] abandoned.'"

- *Surah Az-Zumar (39:23): * "Allah has sent down the best statement: a consistent Book wherein is reiteration. The skins shiver from it of those who fear their Lord; then their skins and their hearts relax at the remembrance of Allah. That is the guidance of Allah by which He guides whom He wills. And one whom Allah leaves astray - for him there is no guide."

These parallels reinforce the message that *spiritual blindness in this world results in deprivation in the Hereafter, especially for those who abandon the Quran. Scholars such as **Ibn Kathir* and *Al-Qurtubi* have highlighted that turning away from the Quran leads to one's heart becoming hardened, making them incapable of recognizing the truth.

Ibn Kathir states that *forgetting the Quran is not merely failing to memorize it but disregarding its meanings and teachings, failing to implement its guidance in daily life. Al-Qurtubi adds that those who abandon the Quran resemble those who are lost in **heedlessness (غفلة)*, eventually becoming blind to divine guidance.

*3. How to apply the lesson*

1. *Engage with the Quran* → Reflect on its verses and apply them to daily life.

2. *Be Mindful of Allah’s Signs* → Recognize His guidance in everyday experiences.

3. *Avoid Excessiveness (Israf)* → Do not let desires and distractions take precedence over faith.

4. *Make the Quran a Daily Companion* → Recite it, understand its meanings, and implement its guidance.

5. *Repent and Return* → If one has neglected the Quran, they should repent sincerely and strive to reconnect with it.

*Lastly*

These verses are a *powerful warning* about the consequences of ignoring divine guidance. The *blindness* mentioned is not just physical but *spiritual, representing the **state of the heart. Those who deliberately reject the truth or abandon the Quran will face a **just punishment*—they will be forgotten by Allah, just as they forgot Him in this life.

**"O Allah, do not let our hearts become blind to Your signs. Keep us among those who see the truth, recite Your Book, reflect upon it, and follow it. Ameen."  **
