Have The Time Not Reached Yet ?

 

Surah Al-Hadid (57:16).


 أَلَمْ يَأْنِ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْ تَخْشَعَ قُلُوبُهُمْ لِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَمَا نَزَلَ مِنَ الْحَقِّ وَلَا يَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ أُوْتُوا الْكِتَابَ مِنْ قَبْلُ فَطَالَ عَلَيْهِمْ الْأَمَدُ فَقَسَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَكَثِيرٌ مِّنْهُمْ فَاسِقُونَ

"Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should be humbled by the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth, and that they should not be like those who were given the Scripture before them, and time passed over them, and so their hearts hardened? And many of them are defiantly disobedient."

Explanation:

This verse is a powerful reminder for the believers, urging them to reflect on their relationship with Allah and the impact of His guidance on their hearts. 

Let’s break it down for a deeper understanding:


"Has the time not come for those who have believed..."

The verse begins by addressing the believers (those who have faith in Allah). The question posed is rhetorical, urging them to reflect on whether they have reached a point where their hearts should respond to Allah’s remembrance with greater humility and reverence.


"...that their hearts should be humbled by the remembrance of Allah..."

This part emphasises that true faith should soften the heart and lead it to humility in the face of Allah’s words and reminders. The "remembrance of Allah" (Dhikr) refers to reciting His name, reflecting upon His signs, and contemplating His commandments and mercy. The heart is described as the seat of faith and spirituality in Islam. A heart that is humble towards Allah will be more receptive to His guidance.


"...and what has come down of the truth..."

The "truth" refers to the divine revelations sent down by Allah, including the Quran. This reminds the believers that the message from Allah is truth, and it should penetrate their hearts deeply, guiding them to righteous actions and moral integrity.


"...and that they should not be like those who were given the Scripture before them..."

This is a cautionary reference to the previous communities, namely the Jews and Christians, who were given the Scripture (the Torah and the Gospel) but their hearts became hardened over time. Despite the divine guidance, they became negligent and did not fully adhere to the teachings. The verse warns against becoming complacent in faith, where the heart becomes hardened due to neglect or distractions.


"...and time passed over them, and so their hearts hardened?"

This refers to the passage of time leading to spiritual negligence. Over time, without reflection and adherence to the divine message, the hearts of those who received the previous Scriptures became hardened, and they became distant from the truth. The verse urges believers not to allow time to pass without reflecting on their faith, remembering Allah, and staying steadfast in their devotion.


"...And many of them are defiantly disobedient."

The verse concludes by stating that many of those who received the previous scriptures eventually became "fasiqun" (defiantly disobedient). The word "fasiqun" refers to individuals who openly disregard or violate Allah’s commands. This highlights the danger of becoming spiritually negligent, leading to rebellion against divine commands.


Lessons from the Verse:

Self-Reflection:

Believers are urged to take a moment for self-reflection—has the time come for their hearts to truly soften towards Allah’s guidance, or have they become distracted by worldly concerns? It’s a reminder that true faith requires an active, ongoing connection with Allah.


Responsibility of Knowledge:

True humility is required in the remembrance of Allah. It is not just about performing rituals or duties but truly feeling Allah's presence and recognizing His greatness in your life.


Avoid Spiritual Neglect:

Time should not be allowed to cause a hardening of the heart. The verse warns against the dangers of spiritual complacency and neglect. The more one distances oneself from the remembrance of Allah, the harder the heart becomes.


Responsibility of Knowledge:

Those who have received the message, whether through the Quran or other scriptures, are responsible for maintaining their devotion and adherence to the truth. Disobedience to Allah leads to spiritual decline, and the believers are urged not to repeat the mistakes of previous communities.


Conclusion:

Surah Al-Hadid, Ayah 16, serves as a wake-up call for Muslims to ensure that their faith remains alive and dynamic, constantly shaped by the remembrance of Allah and His guidance. It encourages believers to avoid the complacency that causes the heart to harden and to always remain responsive to the truth that Allah has revealed.
